Expanded Program Services for Cigna Members in 2014

A variety of programs are available for individuals in your care for whom Cigna administers benefits. We’d like you to be aware of the following programs and encourage the people you serve to take advantage of these wellness support services.

Screenings

Cigna implements screening programs for early identification of co-existing and independent mental health and substance abuse conditions. Screening tools in use are validated by research and literature. Systematic screening for co-existing depression that can accompany medical conditions, for depression, and for alcohol-related conditions is performed for all individuals who present for case management and coaching services. Individuals who screen positive for mental health and substance abuse conditions are assessed further and are offered additional services, as appropriate.

Self-Management Tools

Cigna maintains online, interactive self-management tools for individuals who wish to engage independently in learning more about health promoting activities. Members can access a Personal Health Assessment and a Personal Health Team of nurses and coaches dedicated to member well-being. We encourage you to direct patients in your care for whom Cigna administers benefits to make use of these tools. Tools may be accessed online at myCigna.com, "My Health Programs and Resources". Self-management tool topics include:

  • Better Eating
  • Increasing Energy and Fitness
  • Handling Chronic Health Conditions
  • Healthy Pregnancy
  • Tobacco Cessation
  • Depression
  • Sleep
  • Stress
  • Weight Loss

Case Management/Coaching

Prior to 2013, Cigna progressively developed clinical specialty care management teams that provide members with behavioral case management and coaching services based on condition-specific eligibility criteria. In 2014, Cigna formalized and consolidated these teams under a unified behavioral case management/coaching model with centralized management. Common processes, tools and metrics produce standardization and consistency in service delivery and in process measurement across all clinical areas. In addition to coaching and case management services, standardized condition-specific screening tools, such as the PHQ-9 for depression and the AUDIT–C for alcohol use disorders, have been integrated into the case management/coaching program. The goal of behavioral case management and coaching is to engage individuals in treatment and to improve treatment and medication adherence. Individualized case management plans are created in collaboration with customer/family, and treating professional or professionals. Customers may self-refer by calling the behavioral number on their plan ID card. Network professionals may also inquire about and explore appropriateness of case management/coaching services for individuals in their care as a part of utilization management discussions.
