What you need to know

Childhood immunization status looks at patients two years of age who had 4 DTaP; 3 IPV; 1 MMR; 3 HiB; 3 HepB; 1 VZV; 4 PCV; 2 HepA; 2 or 3 RV; and two flu vaccines by their second birthday.

  • HEDIS relies on diagnoses and procedure codes, as well as patient medical records, to measure performance.

Tips for improving your scores

  • Review a child's immunization record at every visit.
  • Discuss vaccines that the child may be due for and recommend the immunizations to parents. Many parents believe the child is fully vaccinated. Parents are also more likely to agree with vaccinations when the provider's opinion of the vaccine is positive.
  • Follow Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines for recommended vaccines (www.cdc.gov/vaccines) and for immunizing sick children.
  • Schedule patients' next appointment before they leave the office.
  • Institute a system for patient reminders and recall messages.
  • Educate the office staff.
